Claims vs evidence

Synaptril Benefits: Do the Label Claims Hold Up?

Quick answer

Synaptril benefits, as the label states them, are three claims: "Advanced Brain Support*", "Enhances Memory & Focus*" and "Boosts Mental Energy*". No study has tested the capsule. Studies of its six ingredients used far larger doses and found weak or mixed memory effects. The one firm number is 80 mg of magnesium, 19% of the Daily Value.

The claims01

What are the Synaptril benefits on the label?

The Synaptril benefits on the label are three short claims: brain support, better memory and focus, and more mental energy. Each carries an asterisk.

The asterisk leads to the FDA statement on the back of the bottle: *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

The order page adds no other health claim (Synaptril sales page), so the label is the full list of promised benefits.

Three claims, one asterisk each

The claims are structure/function wording. They need no FDA review before sale (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements), and none names a test, a dose or an outcome. The FTC expects health claims to rest on human trials (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

  • Label claim 1

    The label says“Advanced Brain Support*”

What the evidence saysToo broad to test. No trial of Synaptril exists, and an AARP expert panel advises against spending on brain supplements without proof. (AARP / GCBH, Brain Health Supplements 2019)

  • Label claim 2

The label says“Enhances Memory & Focus*”

What the evidence saysCurcumin had a small memory effect in one trial of a high-absorption form at 180 mg a day; acetyl-L-carnitine (not the plain L-carnitine here) was studied at grams a day. The capsule holds far less. (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018) (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia)

  • Label claim 3

    The label says“Boosts Mental Energy*”

What the evidence saysNo stimulant is listed. Researchers split mental energy into mood, motivation and attention, and supplement evidence is inconsistent. Seven or more hours of sleep is the better-proven lever. (Tufts, Mental Energy Claims) (CDC, Sleep)

The asterisk points to the FDA statement on the bottle: these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Icons drawn for this site, echoing the check mark and lightning bolt on the label.

Memory and focus02

Does Synaptril improve memory and focus?

No study shows that Synaptril improves memory and focus, because no study has tested it. The ingredient research is thin and used much bigger doses.

Magnesium's effect on thinking is not known (ADDF Cognitive Vitality, Magnesium). A Cochrane review found no qualifying trials of alpha lipoic acid in dementia (Cochrane, Alpha lipoic acid for dementia). The carnitine memory trials used the acetyl form at grams a day, and Cochrane still found no case for routine use (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia).

Curcumin has the most to show. A meta-analysis of 10 trials found no gain in overall thinking but some working-memory signal (Yu et al., J Prev Alz Dis 2025). One 18-month trial of a high-absorption curcumin improved memory recall in 40 adults (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018).

Ceilings come from the blend math, not lab tests. Butcher's broom has no memory research (EMA, Rusci rhizoma (butcher's broom)). More on the magnesium glycinate line.

Mental energy03

Does Synaptril boost mental energy?

Synaptril does not boost mental energy the way coffee does: no caffeine or stimulant is on the label.

Researchers define mental energy as three things: mood, motivation and sustained attention. Across thousands of studies, supplement evidence for it was inconsistent (Tufts, Mental Energy Claims).

CoQ10 and L-carnitine help cells make energy, but that is chemistry inside cells, not a feeling of alertness. Less than 5% of an oral CoQ10 dose is thought to reach the blood (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10). Seven or more hours of sleep is the better-proven lever (CDC, Sleep).

Side by side04

How do Synaptril's claims compare with the evidence?

Synaptril's claims run ahead of the evidence on every line. The brand badges have the same gap.

  1. Label front“Advanced Brain Support*”No trial has tested Synaptril. Structure/function wording with the FDA asterisk; it is not a claim to treat any disease. (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements)
  2. Label front“Enhances Memory & Focus*”Reviews of brain supplements find no proof that any of them prevents memory decline. None of the six ingredients has strong memory evidence at these amounts. (NCCIH, Supplements for Cognitive Function) (AARP / GCBH, Brain Health Supplements 2019)
  3. Label front“Boosts Mental Energy*”No caffeine or other stimulant is on the label. Researchers define mental energy as mood, motivation and sustained attention, and supplement evidence for it is inconsistent. (Tufts, Mental Energy Claims)
  4. Brand badge“Doctor Formulated”No formulator is named on the label, the order page or the badge. (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance)
  5. Brand badge“Registered FDA Facility”The label prints no facility statement. Registration, where it exists, is not FDA approval. (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements)
  6. Brand badge“100% Natural Ingredients”No certifier is named. The capsule also lists flow agents such as silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate. (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely)
  7. Bottle backThe FDA statement'Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.' That line is accurate, and it is the one to keep in mind. (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements)

Claims as printed on the label and the brand badges. A health claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally from human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

Blend math05

Why are the Synaptril benefits hard to judge from the label?

They are hard to judge because five of the six amounts are hidden in a proprietary blend. The law allows that (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts).

The magnesium still lets you do the arithmetic. Magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium (GlobalRPH, Magnesium Glycinate), so 80 mg of magnesium needs about 567 mg of it. 575 minus 567 leaves about 8 mg for the other five. With a richer 20% grade, they share at most 175 mg.

  • The label lists ingredients from most to least by weight.
  • Each later line holds less than the one before it.
  • Every amount above for lines 2 to 6 is a ceiling, not a measured dose.

Stronger levers06

What has stronger evidence for memory and focus than Synaptril?

Daily habits have stronger evidence than any brain supplement. The Lancet Commission links 14 risk factors to about 45% of dementia cases (Lancet Commission on Dementia 2024).

Keep taking prescribed medicine; treating blood pressure, hearing loss and diabetes is part of that list.

Sleep 7 hours or more

Adults 18 to 60 need at least 7 hours a night (CDC, Sleep).

Move 150 minutes a week

Brisk walking, 30 minutes on 5 days, meets the guideline (CDC, Physical Activity for Adults).

A plain multivitamin

In one large trial, older adults had slightly better word recall after a year (Yeung et al., Am J Clin Nutr 2023 (COSMOS-Web)).

See the Synaptril results timeline for how to judge any change.

Value07

Are Synaptril's benefits worth the price?

That depends on your view of thin evidence: the daily cost runs from $1.63 to $2.97.

The 60-day guarantee includes empty bottles, so a test costs you return postage at most. Compare packs on Synaptril pricing.

FAQ08

Questions about Synaptril benefits

Does Synaptril help you sleep better?

No study shows Synaptril helps sleep. Its 80 mg of magnesium is the only link: in three small trials, magnesium helped older adults fall asleep about 17 minutes faster, with low-certainty evidence (Mah & Pitre, BMC Complement Med Ther 2021). CoQ10 can disturb sleep in some people (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).

Is the turmeric in Synaptril enough to help memory?

Probably not. Synaptril can hold at most about 44 mg of turmeric extract. The one positive memory trial used 180 mg a day of a high-absorption curcumin for 18 months (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018), and plain curcumin is poorly absorbed (Anand et al., Mol Pharm 2007).

Does Synaptril improve blood flow to the brain?

No evidence says so. Butcher's broom, the herb in Synaptril most tied to circulation, is a European traditional remedy for heavy legs and hemorrhoid itching (EMA, Rusci rhizoma (butcher's broom)). It has no listed brain or memory use.

Does the CoQ10 in Synaptril give you more energy?

Unlikely. Synaptril holds at most about 35 mg of CoQ10, below the 300 mg and more used in brain trials. Less than 5% of an oral dose is thought to reach the blood, and a 2,400 mg trial found no cognitive benefit (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).

Has Synaptril been tested in a clinical trial?

No published trial has tested Synaptril. Its claims rest on research into single ingredients, mostly at much higher doses. Health claims should rest on human trials of the same product, the FTC says (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

Can Synaptril help with brain fog?

No study has looked at Synaptril for brain fog. Fog often has a cause worth finding, such as poor sleep, low vitamin B12, thyroid problems or a medicine side effect (NIA, Memory Problems and Aging). A doctor's check is the useful first step.

How much of my daily magnesium does one Synaptril capsule cover?

One Synaptril capsule gives 80 mg of magnesium, 19% of the Daily Value. Women need 310 to 320 mg a day and men 400 to 420 mg (NIH ODS, Magnesium), so it covers about a quarter of a woman's need and a fifth of a man's.
