The formula01
What are the Synaptril ingredients?
The Synaptril ingredients are magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom root extract, L-carnitine, turmeric rhizome extract and coenzyme Q10, all inside one 575 mg proprietary blend.
They fall into three groups. One mineral, magnesium glycinate. Three nutrients tied to cell energy: alpha lipoic acid, L-carnitine and CoQ10. Two plant extracts: butcher's broom and turmeric.
The order matters. A blend must list its ingredients from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts), so the first line is the biggest share and the last is the smallest. Each name below links to its own profile.
- 1Magnesium Glycinate (magnesium 80 mg, 19% DV)Line 1 · 80 mg magnesium (19% DV)
- 2Alpha Lipoic AcidLine 2 · at most 175 mg per capsule
- 3Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) Root ExtractLine 3 · at most 88 mg per capsule
- 4L-CarnitineLine 4 · at most 58 mg per capsule
- 5Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% CurcuminoidsLine 5 · at most 44 mg per capsule
- 6Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone)Line 6 · at most 35 mg per capsule
From the Supplement Facts panel. The six lines are the 575 mg blend, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Other ingredients (the vegetable capsule, cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, silicon dioxide) are not counted.
Full list02
What is on the full Synaptril ingredients list, including the capsule?
The full Synaptril ingredients list adds five "other ingredients" after the blend: hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid and silicon dioxide.
These are the shell and the helpers that let powder flow through a capsule machine. They carry no health claim. None is a sweetener, color, gelatin or stimulant.
| Other ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hypromellose | The vegetable capsule shell, made from plant cellulose |
| Microcrystalline cellulose | Filler that brings the fill to a steady weight |
| Magnesium stearate | Keeps powder from sticking to machine parts |
| Stearic acid | A fatty acid used as a second anti-stick agent |
| Silicon dioxide | Anti-caking agent that keeps powder loose |
Amounts03
How much of each Synaptril ingredient is in one capsule?
Only magnesium is measured on the label, at 80 mg; the other five Synaptril ingredients have no printed amount, but arithmetic sets a ceiling on each.
Magnesium glycinate is mostly glycine, not magnesium. At about 14% magnesium by weight, 80 mg of magnesium needs some 567 mg of the compound (GlobalRPH, Magnesium Glycinate). That is 98.6% of a 575 mg blend.
A generous 20% grade would need 400 mg. Even then, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10 split 175 mg at most, or about 35 mg each on an even split.
At 14.1%, 80 mg of magnesium needs about 567 mg of magnesium glycinate. That leaves about 8 mg for alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10 together.

Arithmetic from the label (80 mg magnesium, 575 mg blend, listed most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts)) and the magnesium share of magnesium glycinate (GlobalRPH, Magnesium Glycinate). The exact grade used is not printed, so we show the range. Ceilings, not amounts.
Research doses04
How do the Synaptril formula amounts compare with research doses?
The Synaptril formula amounts sit well below the doses used in research for every line except magnesium, which is a modest, everyday amount.
The 80 mg of magnesium is about a fifth of the adult RDA and far under the 350 mg supplement upper limit (NIH ODS, Magnesium). The other lines tell a different story. Research on L-carnitine used grams a day; one capsule holds milligrams.
| Label line | Place | Per capsule | Amount used in research | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magnesium Glycinate (magnesium 80 mg, 19% DV) | 1 of 6 | about 400-567 mg | RDA 310-420 mg of magnesium a day from all sources; 350 mg upper limit from supplements (NIH ODS, Magnesium) (Mah & Pitre, BMC Complement Med Ther 2021) (ADDF Cognitive Vitality, Magnesium) (GlobalRPH, Magnesium Glycinate) | Sleep: small, low-certainty trials. Memory: not known |
| Alpha Lipoic Acid | 2 of 6 | at most 175 mg | About 200-1,800 mg a day in human studies; 600 mg in small Alzheimer's studies (MSKCC About Herbs, Alpha-Lipoic Acid) (Cochrane, Alpha lipoic acid for dementia) (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) | No qualifying trials in dementia (Cochrane) |
| Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) Root Extract | 3 of 6 | at most 88 mg | 150 mg of root extract per capsule in a three-ingredient leg-vein product (EMA, Rusci rhizoma (butcher's broom)) (Boyle et al., Int Angiol 2003) | Some evidence for vein symptoms; none for the brain |
| L-Carnitine | 4 of 6 | at most 58 mg | Memory trials used acetyl-L-carnitine at about 1.5-3 g a day (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia) | Not shown for memory as plain L-carnitine |
| Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% Curcuminoids | 5 of 6 | at most 44 mg | 180 mg a day of a high-absorption curcumin in one memory trial (NCCIH, Turmeric) (Yu et al., J Prev Alz Dis 2025) (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018) (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric) (Anand et al., Mol Pharm 2007) | Mixed; poorly absorbed |
| Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone) | 6 of 6 | at most 35 mg | 30-300 mg a day in heart trials; 300-2,400 mg in brain-disease trials (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10) | No cognitive benefit shown |

Which Synaptril ingredients have the best evidence?
Magnesium has the best evidence of the six Synaptril ingredients, and even its link to memory is unproven.
Curcumin comes next, with one small 18-month trial showing a memory gain from a high-absorption form (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018). A pooled look at ten trials found no gain in overall thinking (Yu et al., J Prev Alz Dis 2025).
Magnesium
Small, low-certainty sleep trials (Mah & Pitre, BMC Complement Med Ther 2021); memory benefit not known (ADDF Cognitive Vitality, Magnesium).
Curcumin
Some working-memory signal, poorly absorbed, rare liver injury reports (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric).
The other four
ALA, butcher's broom, L-carnitine and CoQ10 have no memory benefit shown at these amounts.
One profile per line: magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, turmeric and curcumin and CoQ10, plus the links in the formula list above.
Safety06
Do any Synaptril ingredients interact with medicines?
Yes, three Synaptril ingredients have known medicine interactions: CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and magnesium.
CoQ10 has been reported to reduce warfarin's effect (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10). Alpha lipoic acid may add to diabetes drugs and lower blood sugar (MSKCC About Herbs, Alpha-Lipoic Acid). Magnesium binds some antibiotics and osteoporosis drugs, so doses are spaced hours apart (NIH ODS, Magnesium).

Not on the label07
Which ingredients are not in Synaptril?
Rhodiola, phosphatidylserine, ginkgo, caffeine and vitamin B12 are not Synaptril ingredients, even though some articles say otherwise.
Some third-party reviews list Rhodiola or phosphatidylserine. The bottle lists neither, and the label wins.
- No stimulant of any kind
- No B vitamins or omega-3
- No sweetener, color or gelatin

FAQ08
Synaptril questions people ask
What is the first ingredient in Synaptril?
Magnesium glycinate is the first Synaptril ingredient and the largest share of the blend. It supplies the 80 mg of magnesium printed on the label, which takes roughly 400-567 mg of the compound out of the 575 mg blend.
How much alpha lipoic acid fits in one Synaptril capsule?
At most about 175 mg, and likely far less. Alpha lipoic acid is line 2 of the blend, so it can only use the room magnesium glycinate leaves. Small Alzheimer's studies used 600 mg a day (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
How much CoQ10 is in a Synaptril capsule?
At most about 35 mg of CoQ10. It is the last of six lines, so it is the smallest share. Brain-disease trials used 300 mg or more a day (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).
Is the turmeric in Synaptril standardized?
Yes, the label lists turmeric rhizome extract standardized to 95% curcuminoids. It is line 5 of 6, so one capsule holds at most about 44 mg of the extract, and no absorption aid such as piperine is listed.
Is the L-carnitine in Synaptril the acetyl form?
No, the Synaptril label lists plain L-carnitine. The memory studies used acetyl-L-carnitine at 1.5-3 g a day, and even that showed no lasting benefit in a Cochrane review (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia). One capsule holds at most about 58 mg.
Does the Synaptril formula contain gelatin or gluten?
No gelatin or gluten source is listed in the Synaptril formula. The shell is hypromellose, a plant-based material. The gluten-free badge names no test or certifier.
Why are the Synaptril ingredient amounts hidden?
They sit in a proprietary blend. US rules let a blend show only its total weight and list ingredients by weight order (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Magnesium must still be printed because it has a Daily Value, which is why 80 mg is the one amount shown.
