Do Memory Supplements Really Work?

Quick answer

Do memory supplements work? Not reliably. Ginkgo did not lower dementia rates in a six-year NIH-funded trial, short-term B vitamins did not improve cognition in older adults, and one multivitamin trial found a small recall gain. Sleep, activity and treating deficiencies have firmer ground.

What do studies say about memory supplements?

Studies say little in favor. The best-known tests came back flat, with one modest exception.

Memory supplement studies
SupplementFinding
GinkgoNo difference in dementia over a median 6 years (NCCIH, Ginkgo)
B vitaminsShort-term use did not improve cognition (NCCIH, Supplements for Cognitive Function)
MultivitaminBetter word recall at 1 year (Yeung et al., Am J Clin Nutr 2023 (COSMOS-Web))

How do memory supplements compare with sleep and exercise?

Habits have the stronger case. The Lancet Commission linked 14 modifiable risk factors, including inactivity, to about 45% of dementia cases that might be prevented or delayed (Lancet Commission on Dementia 2024).

Adults need 7 or more hours of sleep and 150 minutes of activity a week (CDC, Sleep) (CDC, Physical Activity for Adults).

A 24-hour day: one capsule with breakfast, a focused work block in the morning, a walk in the afternoon, and 7 or more hours of sleep2461218
  1. Breakfast, about 7:30

One capsule, if you take Synaptril. The label gives no time; a fixed anchor makes it easy to remember. Prescribed medicine keeps its own schedule.

  2. A focus block, 9 to 11:30

Hard thinking first, phone away. Timing your best work is a habit, not a supplement effect.

  3. Move in the afternoon

Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, per federal guidelines.

  4. Night, 7 or more hours

Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep. Short sleep shows up as poor focus and memory the next day.

Sleep guidance from CDC (CDC, Sleep); activity guidance from the federal guidelines (CDC, Physical Activity for Adults); risk factors for memory decline from the Lancet Commission (Lancet Commission on Dementia 2024). The time for the capsule is a suggestion; follow your label.

Does Synaptril work as a memory supplement?

Synaptril is labeled "Enhances Memory & Focus*", but no study has tested the capsule. The asterisk marks wording FDA has not evaluated.

Alpha lipoic acid has no qualifying dementia trials (Cochrane, Alpha lipoic acid for dementia), and curcumin helped long-term memory in one small trial of a high-absorption form (Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 2018). Read the ad guide for how to weigh such claims.

When is a memory problem not a supplement problem?

When it keeps disrupting daily life. Ask a doctor, and keep taking prescribed medicine (NIA, Memory Problems and Aging).

FAQ01

Synaptril questions people ask

Does ginkgo improve memory?

Not that large studies can show. In the GEM trial of 3,000-plus adults over 75, ginkgo did not change dementia rates. It may also raise bleeding risk with warfarin.

Do omega-3s help memory?

We can only say the evidence we reviewed is mixed. Ask your doctor before relying on them.

Can a multivitamin help memory?

In one trial of 3,562 older adults, it improved immediate word recall. The gain was modest and one study, so it is encouraging, not final.
