How to Read a Supplement Facts Label

Quick answer

To read a supplement facts label, start at the top with serving size, then read the amounts, the % Daily Value column, any blend, and the small print below. On the Synaptril panel, one capsule is a serving, magnesium is 80 mg (19% DV), and a 575 mg blend holds six ingredients.

What does the top of a supplement facts label tell you?

The top shows the serving size and the servings per container. Every amount below it is for that one serving, not for the bottle.

Synaptril lists a serving size of 1 capsule and 30 servings, so a bottle lasts 30 days.

Check this line first when you compare two products. One brand may count two capsules as a serving while another counts one, and the amounts below change with it.

What do the amounts and % Daily Value mean?

The amount column states how much of a nutrient is in one serving. The % Daily Value shows how that compares with a daily reference amount.

Synaptril prints magnesium 80 mg at 19% DV. The adult magnesium RDA is 310-420 mg, and the upper limit from supplements is 350 mg a day (NIH ODS, Magnesium). A dagger means no Daily Value is set. Percentages assume a 2,000 calorie diet, and a high percentage is not automatically good. For magnesium, the 350 mg upper limit applies to supplements.

Tap a number to read that part of the panel.

  1. Serving

Serving size 1 capsule; 30 servings per container.

  2. Magnesium 80 mg

As magnesium glycinate from the proprietary blend: 19% of the Daily Value.

  3. 19% DV

The Daily Value for magnesium is 420 mg, so 80 mg is 19%.

  4. Proprietary blend, 575 mg

Six ingredients share 575 mg, listed most to least by weight.

  5. The six lines

Magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom root, L-carnitine, turmeric (95% curcuminoids), CoQ10.

  6. Other ingredients

The capsule shell and flow agents. No sweetener, caffeine or color is listed.

What is the proprietary blend line on a label?

A proprietary blend line gives one total weight for a group of ingredients. FDA rules let the maker skip each ingredient's amount (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts).

Ingredients still run from most to least by weight. Synaptril's blend is 575 mg for six ingredients. Magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium (GlobalRPH, Magnesium Glycinate), so the 80 mg takes most of that weight. See the ingredients.

What does the small print on a supplement label mean?

The small print holds "other ingredients", the directions, the cautions and the distributor. Read it as closely as the panel.

Other ingredients are the non-active parts: the capsule shell, binders and flow agents. No caffeine, sweetener or color is listed on the Synaptril label.

FAQ01

Synaptril questions people ask

Why do some supplement labels show no % Daily Value?

No Daily Value is set for that ingredient, so the label prints a dagger instead. It does not mean the amount is zero.

Where do I find the other ingredients on a supplement?

Look just under the Supplement Facts box. On Synaptril it starts with hypromellose, the vegetable capsule.

Does the label tell me who makes the supplement?

Only the party after "Distributed by". On Synaptril that is Gluco Elixir of Aurora, Colorado. No factory is named.
