Do Mitochondrial Support Supplements Work?

Quick answer

Mitochondrial support supplements are products sold to help the cell's energy-making machinery, usually with CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and L-carnitine. The sources we hold do not show that they work in healthy adults. Synaptril carries all three, at amounts the label hides.

What are mitochondrial support supplements?

They are supplements named for mitochondria, the parts of a cell that make energy. The pitch is simple: feed that machinery and you feel less tired.

The idea is neat. The proof is not, and a story about cells is not a trial in people.

Tufts researchers split "mental energy" into mood, motivation and sustained attention. Across about 2,500 studies they found inconsistent evidence for the ingredients they reviewed (Tufts, Mental Energy Claims). Cell energy and felt energy are not the same thing.

Do CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and L-carnitine work?

Not for memory or energy in healthy adults, as far as our sources show.

Three cell-energy ingredients
IngredientWhat our sources say
CoQ10Heart evidence inconclusive (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10); no gain in Huntington's thinking at 2,400 mg (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10)
Alpha lipoic acidNo qualifying dementia trials (Cochrane, Alpha lipoic acid for dementia)
L-carnitineCognition evidence unclear (NIH ODS, Carnitine)

Sources lean on disease settings, such as heart failure, Huntington's or diabetic nerve pain. That says little about a healthy adult.

One more limit: poor absorption. Less than 5% of an oral CoQ10 dose is thought to reach the blood (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).

How much of each is in Synaptril?

Little can fit. The blend math puts alpha lipoic acid at most at 175 mg, L-carnitine at most 58 mg and CoQ10 at most 35 mg a capsule.

Studies used 600 mg of alpha lipoic acid and 1,500 to 3,000 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine. The label lists plain L-carnitine.

  1. 1Magnesium Glycinate (magnesium 80 mg, 19% DV)Line 1 · 80 mg magnesium (19% DV)
  2. 2Alpha Lipoic AcidLine 2 · at most 175 mg per capsule
  3. 3Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) Root ExtractLine 3 · at most 88 mg per capsule
  4. 4L-CarnitineLine 4 · at most 58 mg per capsule

  6. 6Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone)Line 6 · at most 35 mg per capsule

From the Supplement Facts panel. The six lines are the 575 mg blend, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Other ingredients (the vegetable capsule, cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, silicon dioxide) are not counted.

FAQ01

Synaptril questions people ask

What are mitochondria?

Mitochondria are the parts of a cell that make usable energy from food. Supplements named for them aim at that process, but a good story about cells is not proof that a capsule helps you.

Can mitochondrial supplements boost energy?

The sources we hold do not show it in healthy adults. The mental energy research is inconsistent for the ingredients it reviewed.

Do mitochondrial support supplements have side effects?

Each ingredient has its own. CoQ10 may cause insomnia or stomach upset, and L-carnitine causes a fishy odor around 3 g a day.
