Ubiquinol vs Ubiquinone: What's the Difference?

Quick answer

Ubiquinol vs ubiquinone is a comparison of two forms of coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone is the form most labels use, and it is the one on Synaptril ("as ubiquinone"). The sources we hold do not compare absorption between the forms, so claims that one is better are not something we can back.

What is the difference between ubiquinol and ubiquinone?

Ubiquinone and ubiquinol are two chemical forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form, and ubiquinol is the reduced form.

The body can convert one to the other, so both feed the same energy chain. Sellers of ubiquinol often say it absorbs better. We hold no study comparing the two, so that stays a seller claim.

Retail CoQ10 supplements usually give 30 to 100 mg a day, in either form (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10). Neither form is a treatment for any condition, and NCCIH calls the heart evidence inconclusive (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).

Which form does Synaptril use?

Synaptril uses ubiquinone. The label line reads "Coenzyme Q10 (as ubiquinone)", last in the blend.

That order caps it at about 35 mg a capsule, as the blend math shows (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). The label does not say which grade of magnesium glycinate it uses, so 35 mg is the generous case. The real figure could be lower.

  6. 6Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone)Line 6 · at most 35 mg per capsule

From the Supplement Facts panel. The six lines are the 575 mg blend, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Other ingredients (the vegetable capsule, cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, silicon dioxide) are not counted.

Does the CoQ10 form matter for absorption?

It may, but our sources do not settle it. What they do say is that less than 5% of an oral dose is thought to reach circulation, and a fatty meal helps (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).

Should the form decide what you buy?

No. The dose and your medicines matter more than the form.

The warfarin report names CoQ10 in general: it may weaken warfarin (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist. See the CoQ10 profile and how Synaptril compares.

FAQ01

Synaptril questions people ask

Is ubiquinol better than ubiquinone?

We cannot say. Sellers claim better absorption for ubiquinol, but the sources we hold include no head-to-head comparison. Judge a product by its dose and label.

Which CoQ10 form is in Synaptril?

Ubiquinone. The Supplement Facts panel reads "Coenzyme Q10 (as ubiquinone)". The amount is not printed, and the blend math caps it at about 35 mg.

Do both CoQ10 forms interact with warfarin?

The reports we hold name CoQ10 in general, not one form. Treat both the same and ask your prescriber about INR checks.

Is ubiquinone cheaper than ubiquinol?

We hold no price comparison for the two forms, so we will not claim one. Judge a bottle by its printed dose, its label and its return terms instead.
